Taking its title from a carborundum by Gwen O'Dowd, waterbased is a new exhibition at Graphic Studio Dublin, where water is a central element in the composition of the work.

Fragments, Metaphors, Smithereens
Geraldine O'Reilly, Margo McNulty and Merijean Morrissey


Opens on the 3rd March 2016, launched by the Canadian Ambassador, his Excellency, Mr. Kevin Vickers.


The exhibition explores a number of aspects of Irish History. The Easter Rising of 1916 in the work of Merijean Morrissey. References to the history of the Irish College, Centre Cultural Irlandais in the work of Geraldine O'Reilly, based on her research whilst artist in residence at the college, and the Curragh Internment Camp in the work of Margo Mc Nulty where her great uncle was interred.

This exhibition, is the first of a series, that delves into the gallery's extensive stock of Visiting Artists.


The Visiting Artists Programme was established at Graphic Studio Dublin in 1980, as a major collaborative aspect of Graphic Studio Dublin's annual programme. Established artists, whose primary medium is not fine art print, are invited to work with our master printmakers, to create a suite of prints.


Work by Louis le Brocquy, Mary Lohan, Tony O'Malley, John Noel Smith, William Crozier and Geraldine O'Neill are presented alongside recent sculpture by Gwen Wilkinson and Eilis O'Connell.

Graphic Studio is hosting an Autumn Exhibition in an special off-site location. This event is sponsored by Covestone Asset Management and is located in their new offices; 46 James Place East, (just behind the former Bank of Ireland Head Quarters on Baggot Street) Dublin 2.

Graphic Studio Gallery is delighted to host a joint exhibition between two Northern Ireland female artists from Seacourt Print Workshop, Co Down. Deirdre McCrory and Catherine Thompson have been collaborating on their show entitled Near & Far.

Their work explores the delicate imagery of their surrounding landscape. The softness of McCrory's work and the bold lines of Thompson's ensure the viewer experiences the scenery on multiple levels.

Variations on a Theme II

This exhibition evolved last year when a number of artists came together to showcase the prints that they had been making over a period of time. The journey that the artist takes to create a body of work can take many years as the artist explores, discovers and develops a theme or an idea. Tom Phelan

Graphic Studio Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of artist Tom Phelan. Phelan retired as studio manager and master printmaker at Graphic Studio Dublin to concentrate on his own work, after committing over twenty years to the renowned Dublin print workshop.

Mostly working in the medium of woodblock print, Phelan's use of repeat patterns, balance and colour create a body of work that is contemporary, exciting and distinctive, while also showcasing his high technical skills.

Atelier Bo Halbirk Paris


Graphic Studio Gallery exhibits over 30 works of art from the Bo Halbirk Studio's stable of artists. Bo Halbirk Studio was founded in 1992 by the well-known Danish printmaker, Bo Halbirk. He was accompanied by a group of artist-engravers whom he had met at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, becoming the very core of the workshop's founding members. This exhibition brings to Ireland an international exhibition of contemporary prints by fifteen studio members of nine different nationalities together with a collection of artists' books.

Sharon Lee - 'Primordial soup'

This two-person exhibition is the result of Dublin City Council's Arts Plan 2009 - 2013, where Graphic Studio Dublin collaborated with Dublin City Council on an artist residency in The Red Stables. Artist Lars Wikström was selected from a large number of Swedish applicants and spent six weeks with us in July/August 2011. Following this success, Graphic Studio Dublin artist Sharon Lee was invited to spend six weeks in Sweden at Grafikverkstan Godsmagasinet during the summer of 2012.

The enduring power of Dante's imagination in his masterpiece 'The Divine Comedy' has inspired artists from the Middle Ages to the present. On reading this literary epic, the artist Liam Ó Broin began three years ago the daunting challenge to create 34 coloured lithographs in response to each canto of Inferno.

This two person exhibition features the work of Joe Ryan & Tracy Sweeney. Ryan's work is inspired by the theories of Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon and Michel Foucault's institutions and heterotopias. Tracy Sweeney's work stems from days and months of traversing the city of Stockholm. Lost in the city's stations of clinical muted greens, tiled blue tube tunnels and warning signs.

Two person exhibition featuring Gerard Cox and Ciaran Tuite. This exhibition is included in the 'Bealtaine' Festival 2011 and Gerard Cox will do a demonstration on woodblock printmaking and Ciaran Tuite has created a print on the Bealtaine's 2011 theme: 'Push the boat out, whatever the sea' taken from the poem 'At Eighty' by Edwin Morgan, OBE.

Barbara Rae CBE RA, renowned Scottish painter is equally at home with creating prints as she is painting. Printmaking has always been an integral part of her artistic life. For Rae, how she conceives and works on her monoprints, screenprints, carborundums and etchings enhances and informs her paintings and vice-versa.

As the master printmaker Ron Pokrasso quotes: 'Barbara is not a painter who makes prints but a painter and a printermaker'.

And so it goes - Philip Murphy



And so it goes features new works by Philip Murphy. This show incorporates innovative printmaking techniques where Murphy uses plates made from silicone or perspex and methods such as encaustic. Encaustic is a highly pigmented wax, which is painted onto a heated plate from which a monotype can be pulled. More traditional printmaking techniques are also exhibited albeit incorporating sculpture and installation.

Graphic Studio Gallery's autumn exhibition schedule starts with a two-person show by artists Sophie Aghajanian and James Allen. Allen studied at Belfast College of Art and Brighton College of Art. In 1977 he founded Belfast Print workshop, which, is a highly successful Print studio in Belfast. Born in Haifa (of Armenian extraction), Sophie Aghajanian studied at Ravensbourne College of Art and Brighton College of Art.

This is a two person show, an internationally renown artist, Professor Jerzy Jedrysiak and Marta Wakula-Mac, a member of Graphic Studio Dublin. Professor Jedrysiak's work centers on a metaphor 'Silva rerun' meaning The Forest of Things, which dates back to the Roman Empire. Marta Wakula-Mac's inspiration for her linocuts is the creation of the world and celebration of life.

'Le Chéile' - A Welsh / Irish print collaboration

A unique visual dialogue began between two prominent Print Studios in Ireland and Wales namely the Leinster Printmaking Studio, Co. Kildare and the Regional Print Centre, Wrexham, Wales. Irish artists collaborated with Welsh artists to explore themes of land/language/place/sense of belonging. A series of working prints, drawings, collages and text travelled back and forth across the Irish Sea, with each collaborating artist responding to and working on the artworks.

'The Living Air' - New works by Jennifer Lane
& Louise Leonard


This is a two person show with both artists being members of Graphic Studio Dublin. Jennifer Lane specializes in woodblock printmaking. Her new prints derive from an extensive series of drawings from life of pine trees found in the Curragh, Co Kildare and the Alentejo region of Portugal. Louise Leonard combines the techniques of etching and linocut to depict her imagery of landscapes and birds.

'Swedish Group Show' - by Galleri Astley

Graphic Studio Gallery exhibits over 40 works of Swedish art from Galleri Astley's stable of artists. Established in 1977, Galleri Astley is a unique Art Centre set in Uttersberg, Sweden and incorporates a sculpture park, museum, gallery acoustic reserve and a print workshop. In 1994 the centre opened its printmaking facilities and has since showcased and published screen prints from Swedish and International artists.

'Is this real'
New Work by Yoko Akino & Maev Lenaghan


This innovative two-person show by Maev Lenaghan and Yoko Akino investigates universal themes of environment and the human image. Although the basis for Lenaghan's work lies in representation she observes her subject matter sidelong and laterally, touching on the essential need to communicate. These prints are stories without narrative. On graduating from NCAD in 2002 Lenaghan received the Graphic Studio Dublin graduate award and has since exhibited both in Ireland and abroad.

'il giardino' - New works by Cliona Doyle

Cliona Doyle's new works were inspired by and made on location at 'Il Certose di Pontignamo', a 14th century monastery just outside Sienna. The monastery overlooks formal walled gardens, which contain an extensive orchard and olive grooves. In this show the artist explores the significance of a medieval garden both for it’s symbolic meanings, aesthetic qualities and a means to provide sustenance for the monastery and it’s inhabitants.

'Childscapes' - Carmel Benson

Combining figurative and abstract elements, this work is drawn from themes of childhood and nature. Benson's use of corborundum in printmaking creates particularly rich velvety areas of colour and texture. With this strong use of colour, pattern, light and the simplification of perspective, it seeks to explore the integration or isolation of the individual in space and time.

'New works' - James McCreary & Lars Nyberg

Following James McCreary's highly acclaimed retrospective show at in February 2005, McCreary returns with a dramatic series of mezzotints. A master of mezzotint working from dark to light, McCreary burnishes and scrapes back the raised surface of the copper plate to reveal strong and colourful motifs. His delicate use of vivid patterns contrasts boldly with the rich dark backgrounds of the images. James McCreary was elected an Aosdána member in 2005.

Following Richard Gorman's successful solo shows at the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin in July 2006 and at Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris from May to July of this year, presents a unique collection of his woodblocks, lithographs and etchings.

'New works' - Barbara Rae

Barbara Rae CBE, RA a successful and highly acclaimed Scottish artist showcases new prints at Graphic Studio Gallery. Rae was elected President of the Society of Scottish Artists in 1983. She was made a Member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1992 (ARSA 1980) and a Royal Academician in 1996. She has been a Member of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland since 1995 and was a Member of the Board of the British School at Rome in 1998. In 1999 she was awarded a CBE and received an Honorary Doctorate from Napier University, Edinburgh.

'Brandon Etchings' - Niall Naessens

Naessens' new etchings deal with the local landscape. Brandon offers dramatic sea and mountain views but, since settling and adopting the parishioners outlook, Naessens is interested in the smaller more intimate view. He has zoomed into tight details conveying a sense of townland and locality.

'Hanga' - Etchings by Yoko Hara & Takahiko Hayashi

Yoko Hara was born in Japan in 1968. She is an exciting young artist who received her Masters degree in painting and printmaking from Musashino Art University, outside Tokyo.

Takahiko Hayashi was born in 1961, in Japan. Hayashi received a BFA from Musashino Art University and an MFA in printmaking from the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo.
