'New Woodcuts & Etchings' - Tom Phelan

"And that inverted bowl we call the Sky, Whereunder crawling coopt we live and die, Lift not thy hand to it for help-for it Rolls impotently on as thou or I"
- Omar Khayyam

I first heard this stanza from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam from my grandfather as a child. I always loved the description of the "inverted bowl". Simply the idea or the vision of a huge Glass Pyrex bowl upturned over Dublin, cool! As in the stanza, people come and go, buildings are constructed and others razed to the ground. Memory and remembrance are left, and that is the catalyst for these works.
- Tom Phelan.
