New Works - James Allen & Sophie Aghajanian
Graphic Studio Gallery's autumn exhibition schedule starts with a two-person show by artists Sophie Aghajanian and James Allen. Allen studied at Belfast College of Art and Brighton College of Art. In 1977 he founded Belfast Print workshop, which, is a highly successful Print studio in Belfast. Central to Sophie Aghajanian's work is light and its consequential effects in the form of shadows and reflections creating tension, mystery and ambiguity. As the artist states, "Reflections are very important and I seem to like to look at the reflection of an object rather than the object itself." However included in this show are more direct representations of flora from her garden, and her brightly coloured flowers stem from her childhood memories of gardens; an oasis in an arid and dry landscape.
James Allen's etchings and mono prints of the sea are both powerful and evocative. They reveal a depth of understanding of the power and charisma of the natural force and portray its shifting rhythm, colours and character. In his review of the Boyle Arts Festival 20th exhibition Aidan Dunne writes, " James Allen continues his dialogue with the sea in two thoughtful, understated pieces."
Both artists are established painters and printmakers with collections both in Ireland and abroad. Allen and Aghajanian are also featured In a recent publication on printmaking titled "Printmaking: Traditional and Contemporary techniques" by Ann d'Arcy Hughes and Hebe Vernon Morris published by Rotovision.
