» VIEW EXHIBITION PRINTS

Niamh Flanagan's work stems from the idea of travel, focusing primarily on the search for utopias and the restless desire to be somewhere else. It encourages us to re-examine our environment, and moreover brings with it expectation and hope. Her prints depict an abstracted world, telling fragments of stories and showing the unseen and the hidden. Her photographs juxtapose images of a 'real' world with the worlds within the prints. Yet their reality is skewed too, like that of holiday snaps or postcards: they tell only a certain side of the story. Her text work provides a narrative thread that runs throughout.

Niamh Flanagan graduated from the National College of Art and Design. Now a member of Graphic Studio Dublin, she has also had exhibitions in France, Scotland, Norway and Poland.

Paul Furneax explores the ever-changing weather and light conditions of landscapes. The final manifestation of his work is an abstraction and distillation of this contemplation of the landscape, blending the physical reality with the implied. Inspired also by contemporary Japanese gardens and architecture, Furneax uses interesting spatial combinations and stripes, which act as a structural element. This exhibition not only see's prints created solely from Japanese woodblock printing, but also from its combination with both etching and wall mounted sculptural forms.

Born in Scotland, Furneaux studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. He went on to complete a Masters in Japanese Woodblock Printing at Tama Art University, Tokyo, before returning to the Edinburgh College of Art to teach. The last decade has seen his exploration of using traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques in contemporary ways, allowing his work to develop in a contemplative and semi-abstract way.
