Valerie Vahey

Born in Ireland, Valerie Vahey studied art in Dun Laoghaire School of Art, Ireland with evening courses and specialised in wood block printmaking in Seika University, Kyoto, Japan and in L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. She lives in Paris where she continues her research and experiments with wood and paper. Her works include wood block and wood block-collagraph prints, paintings and paperworks and she is currently printing large-format, experimental work on linen, superimposing layers of colour.

Valerie Vahey's polychrome work is abstract and influenced by both traditional and contemporary Oriental art and by Abstract Expressionism. It reflects her interest in writing systems, from Gaelic script to Japanese calligraphy
which have been a recurrent theme in her art for some years.

The artist's work is a visual journal "punctuating the passage of time with reflexions structuring random detail and apparent disorder". Her Carnet de Voyage reflects this approach. There is transparency and opacity, there is a world both above and below the surface, there is echo, water, light and darkness, seeking to expand beyond the frame.
