Constance Short b.1944

Born in Clones, Co Monaghan, Constance Short has worked both as an artist and as an arts organiser and cultural conduit

In the past 40 years Constance Short has had solo exhibitions, executed commissions (Bank of Ireland and GAA Museum etc), given workshops on many aspects of Art, and painted murals with children, (approx 40 with the Arts Councils "Paint on the wall scheme") and community groups and whole villages and colleges, with the biggest "cast" being 5000 in Crossmaglen, and in Dundalk IT (3000). Her most recent art in the community projects involves tile (Ardee girls NS with 300 participants) and a 3-d models of The Secret Garden, Dundalk Museum with a group of children.

Her work has taken her to many countries (mainly solo exhibitions and workshops):Ireland; Dublin, Hugh Lane Gallery (Graphic Studio Dublin) Henkricks Gallery (group shows) and Project (solo and group) etc. Galway: solo shows in Galway Arts Centre, Town Hall Theatre, Spiddal Library and Aras Eanna, Inis Oirr. Belfast: Fenderesky Gallery (group) theatres (solo). Dundalk: Basement gallery (solo), schools (40) and community centres. The USA; New York City, ( solo show, SoHo 20 gallery) Fairfield University, Conn, (solo show and workshops as part of their international visiting artists programme) Wellesley University, Mass( solo) and Westfield State University, Mass (workshops), England; London in The Poetry Society (twice), Germany; Wiesbaden, (invited by Lar Cassidy/ The Arts Council, part of Frankfurt Book Fair), The Czech Republic (solo) and Australia (group).

Her most recent major Dublin exhibition; THE WHOLE 9 YARDS, was in Project Arts Centre, Dublin in Nov 2003 and her next; I BELONG ON THE BORDER was in The Basement Gallery Dundalk 5th Nov 26th Nov 2004, an eight room installation in print, paint, wood sculpture, sound and light, live performances, documentation etc., dealing with all the aspects of marginalisation.

The Linen Hall Library Belfast exhibited The Whole 9 Yds from Sep27th to Oct 15th 2004. Constance did a residency in the library for the first week receiving groups to discuss the contents of her artwork. This was repeated in Galway Arts Centre in Janruary 2005.

She has written extensively on the Arts, most recently in CONTEXT and The Sculpture Society Magazine.

Constance Short has worked with poets Paul Durcan (Collaborative pieces for our 50th Birthdays in 1994 and 60th birthday in 2004), Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill (cover of her book Pharaoh's Daughter), Eavan Boland (six drawings: In Her Own Image), The Poetry Society, London (2 Exhibitions). Cover for London poetry magazine Aquarius, and with Macdara Woods, for "From Inniskeen to Parnassus", and many more
