A member of Aosdána, printmaker James McCreary employs that quietly powerful print medium mezzotint for the luxurious quality of its tone to explore the world of vanishing forests. McCreary was struck by the well known poet Theo Dorgan as he writes "The mysteries of the forest disappear with the forest."
The sculptor Leo Higgins, director of Cast, has produced a series of tree sculptures. Higgins, whose background is 'entirely technical' and who states that "sculpture is terribly important, It's the language of it." It is indeed the language of Beckett in 'Waiting for Godot' where the iconic tree, the "soulless enigmatic tree" that informs these works. However what is interesting is how Higgins portrays the roots or underworld of the tree. As Brian McAvera explains 'as in a Beckett play what you see and here seems relatively simple until you examine the subtext. In the sculptures the subtext is the base, which is actually an abstracted form of the tree's root'. Michael Cullen, one of Irelands leading painters collaborates with master printer Robert Russell to produce a suite of etchings. Cullen has been an interloper in printmaking for over four decades now. In the early eighties under the aegis of the Arts Council's and Graphic Studio Dublin's "Visiting artists scheme" he began making prints at Graphic Studio Dublin where he worked with James McCreary. Printmaking for the painter is another way of painting, albeit at a remove. One paints and draws on the plate or stone and an image is created becoming an extension of the painter's oeuvre. Cullen has always welcomed opportunities to become involved in the complexities of print making as it offers him the possibilities for exploring his current painting practice in an entirely different medium. The results of working in another discipline, in turn, provides feed back into the painting process: often to great profit for the painter.
