Robert Russell

Studying the Breac Maodhóg Shrine (found in Drumlane, Co. Cavan, C. 11th -12th century) brought home the fact that the people who produced the artefacts in the museum were real people. The different clothing, facial expressions and hairstyles on the figures used to decorate the shrine, suggested to me that they were modeled on contemporaries of the maker, they could even have been portraits. The artefacts in the museum were made by real living communities of people from whom we have inherited our intelligence, our looks, indeed all that we are. I have made four prints inspired by the figures on the shrine to represent my three brothers and myself, placing us amongst our ancestors but with the symbols of our modern lives. The small bronze studies are reminders of the personalities from the past.
