Marc Reilly

A vaguely remembered conversation in Glendalough concerning a poem by a monk writing in 11th century Ireland lamenting the depletion of birdsong was the starting point these images. That particular reference proved difficult to trace but many other examples of early writing with reference to birds and an appreciation of birdsong as part of a general love of nature came to light.

Monks illuminating manuscripts in Monastic settlements across the country must have been accompanied by the sound of birdsong, Glendalough must have been loud in early spring with the voices of birds, as it is to day. Perhaps the same song influenced the repetitive pattern being tapped out on to earthenware or metal objects in an earlier time. Perhaps a Lark sang and swooped in the air above the bog in which the bodies now in Kildare Street were first interred.

These prints are an imagined representation of sound, perhaps a common thread over time to
the present; a damp dawn, the liquid song of a Blackbird hailing the coming of daylight, the high
swooping call of a Skylark in a pollen laden sky above an ancient bog, the repetitive chip chipping
of a Wren in the undergrowth, perhaps being echoed by an early Iron tool on stone.
