Geraldine O'Reilly

I was born in the late 1950's and grew up in a rural Ireland which was about to undergo massive changes in a very short space of time. The village I lived in lost it's forge and it's tailor in the early 1960's. Activities like butter making, vegetable growing, hen keeping all but disappeared and more and more food was bought in the shop. Farming became mechanised. New homes were built and all the old ways disappeared. Anything associated with the past like locally crafted furniture, tools and skills were got rid of in the race to modernise.

As a young art student in the 1970's I felt the loss of that heritage - it now existed only in my memory - but as I settled into living in a city - I duly tried to forget about my rural upbringing. With the opening of the Country and Folk collections at the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks in the early 1990's and later the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar, Co Mayo, I was shocked into recognition for my childhood past. For my prints I chose to work with simple artifacts like the Bread Irons and Butter Prints which revealed a simple but for me beautiful aesthetic adorning what were everyday objects. I found wallpaper and lino that brought me back to the kitchen of my childhood - which was a room of clashing patterns which seemed to be replicated in most country homes at that time.
