Jennifer Lane

My work is made in reference to the Pine tree, as much of Ireland was covered by pine forests 8,000 years ago and its use over the years reflects our history. Three of my works pay homage to the pine as used decoratively in the making of Dowry Chests (or Bride's Boxes as there were sometimes referred). It seemed interesting that these boxes, made to contain a bride's fine linen and blankets at the start of her new life were traditionally made of pine, (though wealthier families tended to use oak). I have incorporated the image of the moon alongside the pine, as it had great significance to our celtic ancestors. The phases of the moon were aligned to fertility and life bearing. The crescent refers to early maidenhood, the full moon to fertility and motherhood, and the waning moon to the latter part of the life cycle. It seemed right that the moon should accompany the dowry chests in my work. I have included fossils as a reminder that the mark of
what went before, is still captured in an image - frozen in rock, as in the collections of the National
Geographic Survey, by the National Museum of Ireland.
