Île d'Hiver | Winter Island
Director of the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, France, Sheila Pratschke, selected thirteen Graphic Studio Dublin
artists and asked them to make contemporary
fine art prints in response to the Irish
artefacts in the extensive collections in
the National Museum of Ireland. When
the Director of the National Museum of
Ireland, Dr. Pat Wallace, was asked how
he would describe what comprises the
museum's collections he said that the
Museum holds the material culture of all
the peoples who have ever lived on the
island of Ireland.
The exhibiting artists are:
Jean Bardon, Mary Rose Binchy,
Niamh Flanagan, John Graham,
Jennifer Lane, Brian Lalor,

The title 'Île d'Hiver | Winter Island' refers
to the Romans' description of Ireland,
a land they considered to be at the edge
of the earth and so cold it was barely
habitable. Contrary to being at the edge
of the earth, the Irish collections in the
National Museum of Ireland represent
a nation that culturally collaborated,
traded and looked outward. This inspired
the artists to create a diverse exhibition in
both subject matter and the innovative
techniques that explore those subjects,
including Japanese woodblock on paper
and felt, cubes of carborundum prints,
photo lambda prints and bronze figures.
The exhibition is a striking contemporary
reference to Irish history and ancestry.
The exhibition will transfer back to the
National Museum of Ireland in 2010,
the year of Graphic Studio Dublin's
50th Anniversary.
