Eilis Murphy b. 1980

Eilis Murphy graduated from NCAD with a First Class Honours in Fine Art Print. She was awarded the CAP Foundation award in the same year. She also completed a residency with Custom House Gallery and Studios in Westport in 2005 and an internship with The Centre for Book Arts, New York in 2003. Solo exhibitions include 'New Work' (2007), Custom House Gallery, Westport, Mayo; 'Work of the Devil' (2007), Galway Arts Centre, Galway; 'Devil in the Dancehall' (2006) Charlestown Arts Centre, Mayo; 'Kaeru 1 frog 2' (2006), 'The Return', Goethe Institute, Dublin; 'CAP Foundation Exhibition' (2005), CAP Studios, Dublin. Selected group exhibitions include 'Home' (2010), Draiocht Art Centre, Dublin; 'Guck-in-der-Luft' (2010), 48h Neukölln, Berlin; 'ZOOart' (2009), Cuneo, Italy; 'Drawing Eire' (2009), 411 Galleries, various venues, China. Her practice involves unearthing fragments of local folklore and social heritage. She is intrigued by the way a snippet of a story or rumour develops and becomes fact, attaining mythical status by word of mouth. Using sites and stories to which she has a personal connection, her work explores wider issues, such as local identity, heritage and belief systems.
