Daniel Lipstein b. 1959

Upon graduating from the fine art print faculty of The National College of Art and Design Dublin in 2006 Daniel received the CAP Foundation award that allowed him to produce an exhibition of large scale paintings at the end of the following year. In 2009 Daniel graduated from the masters of fine art course at the print faculty of The National College of Art and Design Dublin and rejoined the Graphic Studio Dublin where he had first been a member in 2002.

Born in Tel Aviv he arrived to Dublin in 1983, now he lives and works in rural county Kildare. Recording his dreams by writing since 1979 he developed a certain understanding of mythology, symbolism and mainly the way emotional projection appears visually through the dream work. Since the late nineties, after a career in natural medicine, he was fully committed to printmaking and painting, using mythical-visual narrative and atmospheric data from his dreams as source material for his visual compositions.

Artists' statement

As a printmaker I have developed a certain sugar-lifting-aquatint technique that allows the full expression and preservation of initial energetic and emotional painterly marks, these are very important in my practice as they allow me a full emotional expression through the unreserved power and quality of these marks, these are somewhat abstract expressionist in style, their emotional power emerges from the feel of the narrative-visionary composition I am engaged with. The biting lines and the aquatint marks express movement, musicality and direction and they merge with the mythological-narrative-content and power of the image as a one unit. When engaging in the process of print making I pay attention to the accidental as it clarifies the nature of the subject matter in a way not known to me before, in this way making art is an informing and a healing practice-journey, hopefully this will also be the effect on the viewer.
