'IS THIS REAL' - New Work by Yoko Akino & Maev Lenaghan

8th May - 7th June 2008

This innovative two-person show by Maev Lenaghan and Yoko Akino investigates universal themes of environment and the human image. Although the basis for Lenaghan's work lies in representation she observes her subject matter sidelong and laterally, touching on the essential need to communicate. These prints are stories without narrative. On graduating from NCAD in 2002 Lenaghan received the Graphic Studio Dublin graduate award and has since exhibited both in Ireland and abroad.

Yoko Akino is renowned for her imaginative graphic statuesque figures set against backgrounds of intricate and geometric design. Studying from the age of nine under the tutelage of her grandmother Fuku Akino, Professor of Painting at Kyoto City Art University, these etchings reflect Akino's interest and expertise in line drawing. The beautifully etched curved line of the human form represents the universal figure. Akino is a member of Graphic Studio Dublin and has exhibited in Japan, Sweden and New York.

The title of this show reflects the artists' wish to make art drawing on their imagination and reality.

Both Artists were selected to participate in Gardens of Earthly Delight at Chester Beatty Library in 2005 and are currently exhibiting in 'Revelation' at National Gallery of Ireland.
