Title: Boundaries
Size: 49.5 x 28 cm
Medium: Etching
This print is about boundaries and multiplicity. Both of these
elements are inherent to gardens, both ancient and modern. To make
the image, I separated these elements, and then exaggerated and
multiplied them. On one side of the image are numerous rectangles
that fold in on each other becoming more minute until only a
miniature golden square is left at the centre. The rectangles suggest
individual garden edges or boundaries, they also reference the
decorative borders used in many of the illustrations in the Chester
Beatty collection. The gold square in the centre indicates the
intrinsic importance and preciousness of gardens as places of
contemplation and activity. On the other side contained within a
similar rectangular shape are hundreds of tiny circular dots of
colour. I often use dots or points in my work to abstractly indicate
crowds and conglomerations of units. In this case the dots indicate
the plethora and multiplicity of items that are housed in even the
most regimented garden.
