Title: Japanese Garden
Size: 36.5 x 55 cm
Medium: Hardground, Aquatint, Chine Collé, Etching
This scene is not of any particular garden but my response to the
many gardens that I saw all over Japan during the journeys that I made within the country in
the 1980's and 1990's with my husband, the painter John Houston.
Before my first trip to Japan, I had studied many books and photographs of Japanese Gardens.
On reflection, however they failed to convey the overall beauty and sense of calm and contemplation
experienced from the actual first hand interaction between the architecture and natural elements of stone, sand, trees and wood.
To me it was a new concept of vision and thought, strength and simplicity.
In this etching I have tried to convey my reaction to this experience.
